Erik Werenskiold grew up in Kongsvinger in Norway.  As a child he became very interested in nature and fairy tales, and since he enjoyed drawing a lot he decided to become an artist.  He studied art at schools in Norway as well as in Germany and France.

In Norway Werenskiold is well known for his drawings from the country side and for his illustrations of the fairy tales in the folk tale collections of Asbjørnsen and Moe. He found inspiration for his artwork in the nature and from his creative imagination, and he had a special ability to visualize the trolls and characters from stories.

Werenskiold is often mentioned together with Kittelsen, another Norwegian troll artist.
