This is
a delightful book with charming detailed illustrations with many hidden trolls
and creatures. My Grandchildren had
to stop and study each picture before we could continue reading.
The story is about a young troll and his friends.
It has many hidden lessons, such as the idea that Trolls are just like
people: “Some are good and some are bad and some are wise and some
are ... not so smart.”
Little Troll sets off to learn if Trolls really explode or turn to stone
in the sunshine. Just because all the Trolls believed it was true, doesn’t
mean it IS true. He receives the
same answer from many different Trolls: “Sunshine is dangerous to Trolls.
That is the way it is, and that is the way it has always been.”

He
meets many Trolls in his search such as a Troll with 3 heads, another one
waiting patiently for a princess, another who loves to scare people who walk
over his bridge and finally two old women Trolls who must share a single eye.
My 10 yr. old grandson laughed out loud about the reference to the
fairytale about ‘the 3 Billy goats gruff’, but this reference sailed right
over the head of our 5 yr. old grandson. The
story is an interesting blending of old Norwegian Folk tales and more modern
ideas. It has a great moral lesson
and is well worth reading again and again.
Mother and grandmother of 5.
